All Colombians between the ages of 14 and 17 must renew their I.D. card. In exchange, they will receive a document with a barcode and security features similar to the holographs on the yellow cédula (an adult's I.D. in Colombia).
The new format addresses the current penal code that seeks more protection for minors and allows for more effective control in situations such as child labor and sexual exploitation.
The renewal will also allow minors to get their I.D. quicker when they turn 18. The wait for delivery of the new I.D. card is currently between 2 and 4 months, since the factory is producing up to 60 thousand documents a day.
