The issue of selecting a new CEO for Metro is starting to take center stage and political interests are already trying to stake their claim. If there's anything that has geared Metro towards its successful present and promising future it's been the fact that it has been shielded from politics through its Good Government Code. At stake are the continuity and expansion of a company that, more than the pride and joy of Antioquia, is an example for Colombia and a source of goodhearted envy for the rest of the continent. Whoever is chosen must guarantee the company's independence, ensure its financial sustainability and expand its operation to other regions in Antioquia. The fact that mobility in the Metropolitan Area becomes more critical and complex as time goes by, a problem made worse by an overwhelming increase in private transportation, requires someone who is totally independent and autonomous, unfazed by political pressures.
For the past seven years Metro has been, along with EPM, among the most highly recognized public entities in the city, a reputation worth protecting and building upon. An important step towards that goal is reaching a consensus. We hope that, even though the National Government holds a majority on the board, the appointment of a new CEO is the result of an open dialogue. There are decisions of great consequence for the region and this is one of them. There is no room for error. Our dear company has already had to pay a hefty price for past mistakes.
