John Sidney McCain, born in 1936, accepted yesterday the Republican presidential nomination for the upcoming United States elections.
He spent five and a half years as prisoner of war in Vietnam, facing torture and refusing an early repatriation offer because it was not fair to the 100 others in the same situation.
To win the support of the conservative wing of the Republican Party, he modified his position regarding immigration and taxes during the primary elections, but remained firm on his support of the United States not withdrawing without victory in the Iraqi war.
